It’s the eve of the Nativity.
And everyone is busy getting organised.
Everyone wants to celebrate and please their loved ones.
That’s normal, but what do we do when we’re in the same situation as Isaac, who wants to celebrate but famine has hit every corner of the country?
Where do we find the solutions to put food on our tables when everything has dried up?
It’s traumatic.
It’s terrifying and we all feel like fleeing from such a situation, leaving because we think we deserve better,
we want to have just a little flour and a little oil but we don’t, it’s impossible.
Just one idea, just one decision, to leave.
That’s what Isaac did, we would have done the same because nobody likes to be in an awkward position,
a position of lack…
In our search for a solution, we’ve arrived in Gerar but we’re not always satisfied, and we intend to continue on our way, we want to go and search by our own means.
What is interesting in this journey towards solutions is that the Lord is asking us not to go down to Egypt, but to stay in the land that he will tell us.
Beloved, in this moment of desert, in this sickness, in this lack, in this discomfort, the Lord asks us and urges us not to return to the world, not to fall into sin, not to go backwards…
It is in this frustration that the Lord will glorify himself, it is in this shame that the Lord will bless us.
He promises to be with us,
he reassures us of his presence in the midst of this storm.
So there’s no need to look around worried,
no need to return to our old lives to look for solutions.
Our God is at work.
And Isaac obeyed,
he trusted in God,
he was strengthened and stood firm.
Can we obey God’s voice in this tribulation?
Can we submit to God’s authority during this time of upheaval?
It was in this obedience that Isaac was blessed.
He sowed in a dry, barren land.
There was no water, no rain, but the Lord in all his greatness and power made himself known.
What was impossible for many was possible for Isaac,
what was dead for everyone came back to life for Isaac,
what was unattainable for others was glorious for Isaac.
The same soil that was unproductive for others was fertile for Isaac.
What are we going through at the moment?
We can emerge victorious because Jesus lives in us.
God wants to give meaning to our lives,
he wants to give us a new direction,
a new purpose,
new experiences,
new opportunities…
We just need to be at his feet and contemplate his holy presence.
His grace is available,
His help is available.
His touch is available.
He wants to locate us.
He wants to hear us.
That’s what he did with Anne in her bitterness.
He did not abandon her, he did not forsake her.
She threw herself at his feet to implore his mercy,
she prostrated herself to call on the Lord for help.
She wept, she cried, she begged and the Lord helped her in her distress.
1 Samuel, 2:1 – Then Hannah prayed and said, “My heart rejoices in the LORD; my strength is lifted up by the LORD; my mouth is open against my enemies, for I rejoice in your help.
The help of the Lord is available to you.
The help of the Lord is available to you,
when his help is available,
we are strengthened and rejoice.
Where we were frustrated by our enemies, we are now the cause of praise.
So grateful are we for this divine favour.
Let us bless the Lord for his hand that never stops intervening in our lives.
