We’re talking about our neighbour this morning.
Who is our neighbour?
The one we love or the one who eats at our table?
Is it the one we honour or the one we despise?
Is it the destitute or the dishonest man in the street?
In general, our neighbour is the one with whom we are in agreement.
Our love for the person we call our neighbour is selective, weak and limited, and this is what leads us to choose for ourselves who our neighbour is.
God calls us to love everyone and to avoid doing evil.
Many times we have caused others to suffer,
we have not helped them,
we have sometimes accused them falsely.
We have sought our own interests and we have not failed to humiliate others.
When we sadden our neighbour, we do evil and lack love.
One day in Luke 10,
A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho. He fell into the midst of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead.
A priest who happened to be going down the same road saw the man and passed by.
A Levite also came to the place and saw him and passed by.
But when a Samaritan who was travelling came by, he was moved with compassion when he saw him.
He came and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them, and put him on his own horse and took him to a guesthouse and cared for him.
The next day he drew out two denarii, gave them to the host and said, “Take care of him, and whatever you spend more I will pay you when I return.
Which of these three seems to you to have been the neighbour of the man who fell among the robbers?
The one who showed him mercy,” answered the lawyer. Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.
In this passage, we see clearly how a child of God who knows that love is God’s greatest commandment is indifferent and insensitive to the difficulties of his neighbour.
He feels no sorrow, no compassion for others, but it is the one we call the fool who comes to the aid of someone in need.
In any case, God recommends one thing to us.
Avoid hurting your neighbour.
Romans, 13:10 – Love does no harm to a neighbour: so love is the fulfilment of the law.
If we love, we will love to see and do good around us,
If we love, we will always be available for others.
If we love, we share what we have received.
This is how we incarnate Jesus Christ.
